Professor Norberto Cysne Coimbra, neuroanatomist, neuropsychopharmacologist and psychobiologist, obtained his medical degree in 1988 from the School of Medicine of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil. He obtained a Master of Science (Magister Scientiae) in Neuropsychobiology, summa cum laude, in 1991 from the Ribeirão Preto School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, University of São Paulo (USP), followed by a Doctor of Science (Scientiae Doctor) degree in Morphology–Cell Biology in 1995 from the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine, University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP). In 2010, he obtained the title of Livre-Docente (Associate Professor qualification) from the Department of Surgery and Anatomy at FMRP- USP, following examinations and a thesis in the field of Neuroanatomy. He subsequently served as Associate Professor (Level III) in the Department of Pharmacology at FMRP-USP from 2013 to 2022 and has held the position of Full Professor in the same department since 2022. Professor Coimbra completed post-doctoral research in the Pain Imaging Neuroscience (PaIN) Group, Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, University of Oxford, from 9 January to 30 June 2006, and subsequently in the Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB), Department of Clinical Neurology, University of Oxford, from 1 July 2006 to 8 January 2007. His current research at the University of São Paulo focuses on the neuroanatomical and neuropsychopharmacological mechanisms underlying panic-like reactions, innate fear-induced antinociception, and the comorbidity between neurological and psychiatric disorders.
